u.s. this was egypt last night. another outburst of anger over the crude anti-muslim movie said to be made in the u.s. but not by the u.s. government. secretary of state clinton tried to make clear about the video today. >> we absolutely reject its content and message. >> reporter: no criticism from mitt romney. after he took hits for accusing the obama administration of sympathizing with the rioters. for the president, a foreign crisis close to election day is a chance to show off leadership. and a chance for a high-profile stumble, campaigning in colorado he talked tough. >> i want people around the world to hear me, for anyone who would do us harm, no act of terror will go unpunished. >> reporter: but in libya, the fbi is just starting an investigation. besides the four murders, and the riots faced by president obama, there's the bloody rebellion in syria.

and new pressure on the u.s. from israel to get tougher on iran over nuclear weapons. republicans are implying president obama is wavering. >> this is a moment for americans to show our closest allies in the middle east that we stand with them unequivocally, unequivocally, no mixed signals. >> reporter: the middle east suddenly a factor in the race for the white house. prior to the current crisis, the nbc news "wall street journal" poll found president obama had a significant advantage over mitt romney on national security and foreign policy. from capitol hill, i'm steve handelsman, news4. we'll have continuing coverage of the embassy attacks. and ahead we'll explain why the actors in that controversial film say they were tricked into participating. first lady michelle obama was also campaigning in virginia today, and just about an hour she'll be speaking at the university of mary washington in fredericksburg.

we started out with temperatures in morning in the low 50s. a lot of locations. take a look at frederick, maryland, at 53 degrees. purcellville, virginia, at 58. lanham, maryland, 55, and fredericksburg, virginia, starting out at 53 degrees early this morning. as far as our temperatures go right now, we have warmed nicely. we're in the 80s. 81 degrees up in olney. and 81 your current temperature in washington, d.c. packs river currently at 76 degrees. not doing too bad out there, right? feels really good and looks really good as well. we hardly have a cloud to be found in the sky. we've got clouds streaming through ohio and kentucky. meanwhile, look at the clouds, and the rain that's made its way out of areas around colorado. denver, now, at 67 degrees. kansas city at 55 degrees. this is all part of the same front that will be coming through our area before the week is over. and will deliver, i think, a few

sprinkles in a couple of neighborhoods. as far as your hometown forecast for clarendon, virginia, 68 degrees the temperature by early tomorrow morning. we'll hit the numbers like 68, around 70 degrees by early tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. we'll pick up a few clouds with that weather front. we'll talk about the sprinkles and our next best chance of rain coming up in a couple of minutes. the federal government today is taking a series of aggressive actions to try to boost the still weak economy. today the fed announced it will spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgage bonds to stimulate the real estate market. that will continue as long as the fed deems necessary. short-term interest rates will also remaint record lows through mid-2015. the fed says today it's prepared to take other actions if unemployment doesn't improve. there are currently more than 12 million people out of work. after years of complaints, problems and legal fights, demolition began today on a

vacant apartment complex here in capital heights. all the residents moved out of chapel woods apartment six years ago. since then, there were issues with squatting and prostitution in the empty buildings. coming up tonight at 5:00, tracee wilkins will tell us how neighbors get a say on what will actually go up on this site. it's not popular with everyone, but new york city's ban on large sugary drinks passed easily today. it was unanimous. michael bloomberg said it will save lives. but as erica edwards reports, opponents are still fighting back. >> reporter: new york city is putting a lid on oversized soft drinks. the city's board of health has approved a limit of 16 ounces on sodas and other sugary beverages served in restaurants, movie theaters, food trucks and ballparks. grocery stores are exempt. the aim is to cut calories and whittle the waistline of the more than 50% of new yorkers

considered overweight or obese. >> this is the single biggest step any city has ever taken to curb obesity. >> reporter: a typical can of soda is 12 ounces. allowed under the ban. a typical bottle is more than what will be allowed, 20 ounce sgls this is not banning your ability to buy the size you want, simply the size of the cup that can be used. >> reporter: new yorkers for beverage choices is threatening legal action, saying it's not fat that will be lost, it's freedom. >> we do not believe that restricting the size of one product in certain establishments in the city is a comprehensive approach we need to deal with this issue. >> reporter: but many obesity experts say it's an important first step that is expect to march across the country. >> boston has started talking about it, a number of cities in california, a number of cities in the midwest. so what mayor bloomberg has done and what the city of new york has done has started the

nonstop sequence of insults against muslim and its prophet muhammad. >> if they are depicting the prophet muhammad in negative terms, i could see just about any muslim to be insulted. very much like if you depict, for example, jesus, jesus christ in very negative terms, most devoted christians would be alienated. >> reporter: in that casting call, the producer is listed as sam bacile, reportedly in hiding now. but a key moving force behind the film is spokesman steven klein. he's led anti-islamic protests and has an internet show called "wake up america." klein said bacile is a pseudonym for the producer who came to him. >> i wasn't afraid to tell the truth on this stuff.

>> reporter: but two of the actors were never truthful with them. one said there were pages from the screen play to show the name muhammad in the most offensive lines were not in the original script, and all were dubbed in later. another, cindy lee garcia, said the cast was misled completely about what the film would depict. >> i first saw the trailer, i was confused. and i thought, what did he do to this movie, you know, that was supposed to be something different. >> reporter: steven klein voiced neither regrets nor apologies. >> i'm telling the truth. >> reporter: but hates speech monitors that had klein on their radar for years. >> steven klein has been involved with extreme groups that are anti-muslim, and that portray themselves as pro-christian. particularly those that he believe are protecting the united states from a third jihad. >> reporte >> that was mike tiebi reporting. one actress said she's afraid

steals his wallet, cell phone and jewelry and then takes off. the victim was later hit by an oncoming train. he survived but his injuries are serious. the suspect is still out there. a dream about backyard grilling turned dangerous at a kentucky apartment complex overnight. one apartment caught fire and investigators believe a person who lives there was sleep walking. the blaze started in the person's bedroom. the other people living in the apartment noticed smoke and called 911. firefighters quickly put it out. the sleep walker was then taken to a hospital but was not seriously hurt. just ahead, bank robbers who seem to take off robin hood. >> they tossed cash out of their getaway car.

angeles took a bizarre turn as police closed in yesterday. the suspects started dumping money out of their get jay way car. that caused big problems for

police. >> reporter: cops, robbers, and plenty of cash. >> up on the sidewalk. >> reporter: not a hollywood blockbuster, just a highly unusual crime scene. wednesday in south los angeles, police chased a vehicle with four suspected bank robbers at speeds reaching 110 miles per hour. >> oh, wow, look. >> reporter: as many as a dozen cruisers jumped into the pursuit. but the real excitement was the money. >> oh, look at the money. look at the money. >> reporter: for reasons known only to them, the suspects rolled down the windows and started tossing out cash. >> whoa, look at that. >> reporter: with the chase playing out live on tv, it didn't take long for people to start lining the streets, waiting for a passing windfall. rushing for the dollars they created a human obstacle course for the officers. >> this is really crazy. >> reporter: more than an hour after it began, the money trail and the pursuit came to an end. people pulled in front of the suspects and they were taken into custody. but the lure of free money had drawn a crowd.

>> it could get ugly. this is a mob scene. >> reporter: hundreds of spectators swarmed in, some perhaps looking for a stray bill. >> robin hood for me. >> reporter: additional officers were called to the scene and soon order and good citizenship were restored. >> i'm told several people have come up with little bits of money that they picked up on the street and were looking for a place to turn it in. >> some were saying take the money and run. no, that's not my money. i didn't work for this money. and i just came to the station and said, you know, here's the money i found in the street. >> reporter: during the chase, police took a gps position every time money left the vehicle. they knew where to look for it, and with the cameras rolling they have a good start on tracking down anyone who might still be holding on to those stolen bills. all four suspects are in police custody. police are hoping anybody who picked up that stolen loot will turn it in. now, at 5:00, the fight for
